FUSION EDGES

One of the major struggles of furniture manufacturers has been eliminating the bonding line that remains after edging application. Thus, the conventional gluing system with adhesives is being replaced by laser, plasma, hot-air or NIR fusion technologies. These processes are revolutionizing the sector, since they guarantee an indisputable quality to the final work with a practically unnoticeable glue line while reducing time on preparation and maintenance of the edgebander and eliminating costs with adhesives and cleaning products, besides to significantly increase outputs. To meet growing market needs, PROADEC offers two different fusion technologies - PROAIR and FUSION - designed for application with glue-free fusion technologies. These edgings consist of a standard plastic edging in which the conventional primer applied to the back of the edging is replaced by a functional polymer that activates according to the fusion system in use, ensuring the perfect adhesion to the panel.

FUSION EDGES

PROAIR

Suitable for hot-air processing only

Hot-air technology is a welding process to apply edgebandings to boards in place of conventional hot-melt adhesive through the use of hot-air activation of a functional layer applied to the reverse of the edging.
The functional layer, made of a special polymer is applied to back of the edging prior to processing, thus eliminating the need for any additional hot-melt glue application in the edgebander itself. This eliminates the need for heating-up time and glue tank changing for different edging colours. It enhances the adhesive properties and the overall resistance to eat, water, moisture and dirt while giving a very good optical zero-joint finish.

How it works?

Hot-air units use the very simple principle of compressed hot-air (400-500° C) to perform the melting of the functional layer applied to the reverse of the edging. This activates the layer and bonds the edging to the panel fibers. In addition, it is environmentally friendly providing a "clean – green” technology that eliminates glue and fumes. Because no hot-melt adhesive is used, it does not occur staining or discolouring of the joint.
This layer consists of a special polymer that can only be activated using the hot-air technology. The functional layer is available in 4 shades: white, black, brown and transparent

Product Specifications

ABS
Thicknesses from 1mm up to 2mm
Widths from 16mm up to 60mm
Available in plain colours and printed decors in all ABS surface finishes.
Slit material only.

The functional layer is matched according to the edging specifications (colour, thickness) and therefore the key application parameters do not need to change according to the thickness or colour of the edging.

PROAIR

FUSION

Suitable for all fusion technologies (laser, hot-air, plasma, infra-red lights).

There are two distinct production processes for the Fusion Edge:

1.CO-EXTRUDED  in which the application of the premium functional layer is done online, throughout the extrusion process, substituting and surpassing the conventional primer. In this case, the functional layer is developed to colourmatch the edging’s base substrate. Available in ABS and PP.

2. POST-EXTRUDED in which the application of the functional layer is done offline. It is applied on finished product and on top of the conventional primer resulting from extrusion. However, it differs from the PROAIR system because the functional layer is developed to match the base colour of the edging.

How it works?

The fusion systems work without the need for hot melt adhesives. The standard adhesive applicator inside the machine is replaced by a highly efficient fusion system (using an oscillating mirror or optics). Through the action of warmth and pressure, the functional layer melts and penetrates into the substrate of the board, creating a seamless and a lifetime bonding.

Functional layer

Fusion Edgings are recognized in the market for its premium/optimized functional layer featuring perfect mechanical processing, perfect transition between the board and the edging (invisible glue line), high heat resistance, high UV stability, long term use.

Advantages of Fusion-Edge

.Zero glue line (the glue line exists but it is invisible);
.The glue line does not yellow or get dirty;
.The functional layer is developed to match the edgebanding colour base;
.Perfect colour transition from edgebanding to laminate;
.Increased moisture resistance;
.Excellent adhesion
.Suitable for different edgebanding materials, sizes and colours
.Elimination of adhesive cost
.No messy glue pot, no glue change over time

Fusion edges compared to other options on the market:

Fusion edged are more efficient and economical in terms of application, as they spend approx. 15% less energy to melt the functional polymer. In terms of material, our functional layer is more flexible than others which sometimes are very hard and break easily.

Fusion edge compared to conventional adhesives:

Regular hot-melt adhesives: Fusion-edge is far more efficient during processing, finish and lifetime.
PUR (Polyurethane) adhesives:  the difference between a PUR polyurethane and a conventional hot melt arises because a chemical reaction takes place during which the PUR fuses with the substrate of the board. This reaction, which lasts for a few days, creates a permanent chemical change that greatly increases both thermal and chemical resistance. Excellent finish and long-lasting pieces but bigger outputs with Fusion- edge.
